Tony Chou is the first—and one of the very few—native Chinese comedians to tour the world performing in English. Based in New York, Tony has brought his comedy to cities not only across America and his home country China, but also in the U.K, Australia, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, aboard international cruise ships, and more.
As a pioneering stand-up comedian from China, he has been featured in numerous international media outlets, including the BBC, The Atlantic, CNN, The Economist, The New York Times, CCTV, CGTN, Bloomberg, the Financial Times, the Associated Press, SinoVision, China Radio International, China Daily, Global Times, China Entrepreneur, Voice of America (VOA), NBT World (Thailand), The Nation (Thailand), and Kiss92 FM (Singapore), among others.
Tony has bought his own show “Too Funny for Beijing” to the Sydney Fringe as the only comedian from China. He also performed in top comedy clubs around the globe, such as such as the Comedy Cellar (New York), New York Comedy Club, Comedy Mothership (Austin), West Side Comedy Club (New York), EastVille Comedy Club (New York), The Comedy Store (London), Hot Water Comedy Club (Liverpool), Backyard Comedy Club (London), Up the Creek (London), The Craic Den (Dublin), International Bar (Dublin), Comedy Club Bangkok, The Comedy Joint (Bangkok), TakeOut Comedy (Hong Kong), Backstage Comedy Club (Hong Kong), Comedy Masala (Singapore), East Coast Comedy (Singapore), The Lemon Stand (Singapore), The Comedy Corner (Kuala Lumpur), Tokyo Comedy Bar (Stand-Up Tokyo), Comedy Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Norwegian Cruise Line, and more.
He has also opened for comedians such as Des Bishop, Ronny Chieng, Joe Wong, Da Shan (Mark Rowswell), Wil Sylvince, Tom Rhodes, Mike Ward, and Graham Elwood on their tours.
In China, Tony is recognized as one of the early founders and key figures in shaping the local stand-up comedy scene. Since 2014, he has managed a primarily Mandarin-speaking comedy club called “幽默小区 (The Humor Section).” He is also the first-ever native Chinese comedian to perform stand-up on international cruise ships. Some Chinese audiences know Tony from the award-winning, American-style late-night show he co-hosted, The Liang Huan Show, on the major streaming platform TV.Sohu. Although the show was eventually banned by the Chinese government over a political joke, it remains widely regarded as one of China’s coolest and most innovative comedy variety shows.
Tony’s previous professional experience includes working as an on-camera correspondent for China Central Television’s Business Channel and as an English teacher with New Oriental Education Group.
